Tips and Tricks

  • Get out of AUTO! Learn how to set the camera manually. It's your shot, control it yourself. There are many videos on the web that will explain aperture, shutter speed, and ISO.

  • Crop in the camera. Don't crop in software. If you're not sure about your shot try shooting it wide, medium, and tight. This will ensure that you won't have to crop after the fact.

  • Don't cut off body parts awkwardly. Pay attention to the corners and the bottom of your view finder. Make sure hands, fingers, feet, and toes are all visible if they are a part of the shot. Don't cut off at the ankles or wrists. It is okay to cut off at mid thigh, below the knees, above or below the elbow.

  • Quality is everything not quantity. Don't worry about how many shots you get on a shoot. Instead, take the time and get the best compositions and angles. This will get you more clients in the end.

  • Once you begin making money save up and invest in good glass. Good glass makes a world of difference in your work. Your work will be sharper, more vibrant, and you will be able to shoot better in low-light situations. The three most important lenses to have are a 14-24mm f2.8, a 24-70mm f2.8, and a 70-200mm f2.8. Remember it takes money to make money.

  • Always focus on the eyes. Make sure that the eyes of a subject are the sharpest focus in the photograph. It is okay to "chimp" to make sure you get the shot successfully.

  • Get different angles. Lay down if you have to. Get the shots that stand out and are different. Be creative.

  • Remember, practice makes perfect. Read books and magazines and watch videos frequently to keep up with technology and learn the latest tips and tricks. Put the information you learn to use. Get out your gear and try it out.
